Philadelphia has always been a breeding ground for some of
the finest music and artistry ever to embrace radio and retail shops across the
globe. Daryl Hall and John Oates are one of the most successful recording duos
in modern history and their first projects on Atlantic Records "Whole
Oats" and "War Babies" both show the richness of their Philly
rock and soul sounds which soon became a cornerstone to their biggest albums
and singles yet to be released in the decades to follow.
"Whole Oats" started it all in 1972. Produced by
the legendary Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, The Rascals), the seasoned vet
brought the best out of the young duo with fan favorites like "I’m
Sorry" "Goodnight and Goodmorning" as well as the big radio hit
"Fall in Philadelphia", which has been featured recently on Daryl
Hall's smash TV series "Daryl's House"
Daryl Hall elaborates “‘Whole Oats’ was a compilation of
songs that were written in our college and post college days. And, for me,
reflected a newfound interest in things outside of pure Philly soul.”
Their impeccable harmonies and multi-instrumentation blended
famously with Mardin’s New York production especially on soul filled ballads
like "Lily (Are You Really Happy)" plus the Daryl Hall masterwork
Major success followed with their second album Abandoned
Luncheonette (FRM7269 LP) thanks to the smash hit "She’s Gone" as
national tours and massive radio exposure began.
Always growing their sound, their third adventurous release
"War Babies" was a prog-rock venture filled with stellar musical
support and production from fellow Philly rock icon Todd Rundgren.
John Oates describes the session “‘War Babies’ was an urban
experiment and introduced an aggressive more progressive component that would
be incorporated into future albums in various ways.”
The prog sound of tunes like the masterful "Is It A
Star?" and the keyboard and synth driven tracks like "70’s
Scenario" still reach into the soulful harmonies of the duo.”
Their first Lp to chart, thanks to solid rock radio support
on the above tracks as well as soulful rockers "Can’t Stop The Music"
and "Beanie G. And The Rose Tatoo", their affiliation with Todd
Rundgren would continue over the years with tours and recordings.
No stranger to Hall and Oates, Friday Music is pleased to
announce both "Whole Oats" and "War Babies" together for
the first time in this exclusive limited edition double cd package, mastered
impeccably from the Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso.
Enhancing this fine 2 CD release, we are also including the
