In 1969 the Buffalo Springfield's Richie Furay and Jim Messina formed Poco along with Rusty Young, George Grantham and Randy Meisner. A super group in the making, this powerful line-up of musicians helped shape and further the country rock sound which was established a few years earlier with bands like The Byrds, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and even some of Michael Nesmith's earlier works in Nashville with The Monkees.
Upon Randy Meisner leaving the band to join The Eagles, he was soon replaced by future Eagle Timothy B. Schmit. Jim Messina left to form Loggins and Messina and was then replaced by Paul Cotton. Which leads us to the Mark III version of Poco and this wonderful impeccably mastered revisit of Poco-Live At Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71.
On the heels of their fourth album, From The Inside, the prolific band was in Los Angeles for a concert series at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, when the brass at Epic Records arranged an invite only gig at the prestigious Columbia Records Studios for Poco's family and friends.
Poco opens the lively set with I Guess You Made It from their critically acclaimed Poco album, and from thismoment on nothing but great music and top notch showmanship makes this concert recording truly a historicrelease. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Richie Furay continues the upbeat performance with the country rocker A Man Like Me from their historic live Deliverin'.
The LP also features some very fine lead guitar from newest member Paul Cotton, displaying a harder rock side to the band, and this sound would continue to follow in later albums throughout
the seventies. The stellar From The Inside LP receives nice coverage here as superior live renditions abound like the powerful You Are The One with an electrified pedal steel workout from Rusty Young, the country blues belter Railroad Days and the superlative Bad Weather, making this truly one of the finest earlier performances of Paul Cotton.
Richie and Co. kick things up a notch further with a stunning medley of songs featuring both Poco and Buffalo Springfield classics with Hard Luck/Child's Claim To Fame/Pickin' Up The Pieces.
More of Poco's finest like Just For Me And You and C'mon close out the masterful performance making this brand new Relayer Friday Music compact disc even that more enjoyable of a listen.
The proof is in the music, and this rare performance from Poco is one of those magical nights fortunately preserved for all of us to enjoy for many years to come. Relayer Friday Music is proud to reintroduce this impeccable ecording for ears that may be hearing this for the first time. Sit back, enjoy, and let the music of Poco take over...
Rock on!
