Additional Details
Six decades ago, the West Coast Jazz community was truly turning out some incredible recordings thanks to multi-instrumentalists like Jack Wilson (piano) and Roy Ayers (vibes). Both gentlemen had already been cutting some wonderful sides for Atlantic Records and Vault Records and solidifying reputations as young lions into the ever growing jazz music market. As their musical partnership developed, 1966's "Ramblin'" would soon become one the first jazz fusion projects that would gain acceptance not just with jazz connoisseurs, but with a pop audience. Much like Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith and The Jazz Crusaders were all enjoying at this time.
Jack had already gained a major reputation playing major stints with jazz greats like Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, you name it... Jack was on the scene. Roy Ayers got his early break playing with jazz brilliance like Curtis Amy, Gerard Wilson, and eventually became a star very early on with the help of Atlantic's prime jazzman Herbie Mann.
The ingredients were really correct for the recipe that would soon become "Ramblin'" for these two jazz giants. The opening title tracks starts it all, Monk Montgomery's bass work (Wes Montgomery's brother) and Varner Barlow's drum hits put this track into a major groove, that sets the session into full gear. Roy and Jack play off of each other's hooks and then the party begins.
Stellar covers of Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" and John Coltrane's "Impressions" made the album a much welcomed gift to the ears of jazz and underground radio programmers as the Lp began to receive acclaim in the music world.
